A record number of Americans are expected to travel for the holidays this year, according to AAA’s projections.

The group says it expects 93.6 million people to be on the highways for the year-end holidays, a 1.5 percent increase over last year. The year-end holiday period is defined by AAA as Friday, Dec. 23 through Monday, Jan. 2.

AAA says the increase in travel this year is due to additional consumer spending, low gas prices and increased consumer optimism. The group says New Year’s gas prices are the second-cheapest in nearly a decade with the national average for gasoline at $2.23.

The group also projects warm-weather destinations in Nevada, Florida and California to be some of the most popular destinations with the most traffic this year.
