Advancing in trucking: A look at a small fleet success story and career paths for drivers

It’s a common story in the U.S. trucking industry to hear how a fleet — even some of the biggest fleets — started with a one-truck owner-operator.

CCJ sister site Overdrive recently took a look at career paths for owner-operators or drivers, and how they could leverage their experience driving or operating a one-truck business into other positions at carriers and/or roles within the trucking industry.

As a follow-up to his reporting there, Overdrive Senior Editor Todd Dills posted a write-up this week on Old Time Express, a roughly 20-truck fleet located in Tennessee.

The carrier, as you probably guessed, began with a driver’s ambitions to become an owner-operator after becoming increasingly unhappy at his current job.

Dills details Old Time’s beginnings here, pointing toward fleet expansion as another “career move” for owner-operators looking to change their role in trucking.

He also examined in the multi-part series how drivers can transition to becoming brokers or freight agents, work in dispatch or operations or become diesel techs.
