Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems will be the site of a two-day Mental Health First Aid certified training course aimed at members of the business community. Scheduled for Dec. 7 and 8 in the Bendix Training Center in Elyria, Ohio, the course is being conducted for the first time ever in Lorain County.

Mental Health First Aid is a public education program that helps community members identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illness and substance use disorders. The 12-hour interactive course offers an overview of mental illness, including risk factors, warning signs, resources, common treatments, and self-help techniques.

Open to the community, the Mental Health First Aid course at Bendix is geared toward people in the business environment, such as nurses, human resources professionals, supervisors and members of emergency response teams. The course will be taught by Shanna Dunbar and Fran Burrows, registered nurses who are certified in occupational health nursing. They will focus on mental health as it relates to occupational health, making the course particularly useful for the business community.

“Health and wellness has long been a priority at Bendix, and we’re proud of the diverse programming we make available to our employees and their families,” says Diane Shields, vice president of human resources and organizational development at Bendix. “Promoting and supporting healthy and productive behaviors is part of our vision. Our programs – such as onsite mammography and other health screenings, flu shots and Weight Watchers at Work, to name a few – are making a difference in our employees’ lives. The Mental Health First Aid course allows us to reach beyond our walls and affect people in the community we call home.”
