Con-way, U.S. Xpress raising driver pay

Con-way (No. 5 in the CCJ Top 250) and US Xpress (No. 12) both announced increases in their driver compensation packages Aug. 11.

Con-way Truckload announced it is increasing its per-mile pay, increasing layover pay and adding a new incentive bonus, all of which goes into effect Sept. 7.

Con-way says when combined, the compensation changes bring its pay for new-hire experienced drivers to 42.5 cents a mile.

The bonus can be earned by reaching certain mileage or continuous employment thresholds, Con-way says, and will be paid as an annual bonus up to 3 cents per mile from the previous 12 months.

The layover pay is increasing from $60 to $75 per day.

U.S. Xpress says it is increasing its base mileage pay for over-the-road, non-dedicated drivers by an average of 13 percent. Its pay increase goes into effect Aug. 25.

The carrier says its pay increases is designed to help recruit new drivers and retain current drivers.

It’s also eliminating its sliding pay scale in favor of what it says is a simpler pay structure in which drivers will earn their base mileage pay regardless of the length of haul.
