FedEx said in an announcement Oct. 22 that it is anticipating Monday, Dec. 10 to be its “busiest day in history,” predicting 19 million shipments via its ground, express and freight network and plans to hire nearly 20,000 seasonal employees because of it.

“The 10 percent, year-over-year, busiest day increase will once again be driven by e-commerce,” the company said in the announcement, adding that last year, $1.1 billion was spent on that Monday — “Green Monday,” the second Monday of December each year.

For the entire holiday season — the span between Thanksgiving and Christmas — FedEx says it projects it will more more than 280 million shipments, which would be a 13 percent year-over-year increase in volume. In the same time period in 2011, FedEx moved 247 million shipments.

The holiday shipments will mainly include personal electronics, apparel, luxury items and products bought from online retailers, FedEx says.
