FHWA to modify vehicle width regs

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration HWA is requesting comments by Sept. 27 on two vehicle width proposals. The first would increase the distance that width exclusive devices could project from the side of a commercial vehicle from 3 to 4 inches. The proposal is a first step toward harmonizing size and weight limits where possible in accordance with the North American Free Trade Agreement.

The second proposal would remove recreational vehicles from consideration as commercial motor vehicles. Under current regulations, RVs are treated as commercial vehicles prior to their delivery to customers, such as when they are moved from manufacturers to dealers.
