With five months remaining, time is running out for motor carriers to gear up for the Electronic Logging Device mandate. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration plans enforcement to begin on Dec. 18, 2017.

On this date, roadside inspection officers can place drivers out of service for not having approved electronic devices record their hours-of-service duty status. The days of paper logs or electronic logbook apps are coming to an end.

On July 20, from 10-11 a.m. CT, CCJ will present a webinar packed with expert advice on ELD evaluation and implementation strategies from Benjamin Ramsay, vice president of technology for Tradewinds Logistics, an Indianapolis-based truckload carrier.

Ramsay has 12 years of experience in the trucking and logistics industry. He led Tradewinds’ initial adoption of electronic logs in 2011 and has worked closely with many telematics providers to understand the pros and cons of the different products in the market.

Ramsay is co-founder of ELDratings.com, a website that provides user reviews of ELDs. The site is dedicated to being a community resource for the trucking industry, and offers free advice to fleets and drivers trying to choose the right product for their business.

“The short and informative webinar presents an opportunity to fleets of all sizes to gain a clear understanding of ELDs and what they should consider when evaluating products,” Ramsay said. “We will also discuss strategies to maximize return on investment from the technology beyond compliance.”

During the CCJ Webinar, Ramsay plans to discuss his own, first-hand experiences of evaluating ELD technologies and the impacts of the coming mandate. His presentation will cover strategies to manage the information from ELDs, from keeping supporting documents to having policies and procedures for violations. He will also share benefits gained from features of ELDs that maximize value beyond compliance.
