U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood on Friday, June 3, applauded Maine Gov. Paul LePage for signing a strong new law that prohibits texting while driving. The law makes Maine the 33rd state to prohibit texting behind the wheel. Under the new law, which takes effect in September 2011, violators will face a minimum fine of $100.
“Distracted driving kills thousands of people every year on our roads and injures hundreds of thousands more,” LaHood says. “By signing this tough texting ban into law today, Governor LePage has taken a crucial step to improve safety and save lives on Maine roads.”
With the addition of Maine, 33 states, the District of Columbia, and Guam now have banned text messaging by all drivers. Eight states, the District of Columbia and the Virgin Islands have prohibited all handheld cell phone use while driving.
States that haven’t yet banned text messaging while driving are Alabama, Arizona, Florida, Hawaii, Idaho, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas and West Virginia. Some localities in those states have passed their own distracted driving bans, but Florida, Mississippi, Nevada and Oklahoma prohibit localities from enacting such laws.

No kidding Sherlock. Next thing ya know they will ban bathrooms with showers and tubs because tens of thousands of hapless individuals are killed and or injured in them every year.
Why do we need more laws to do the same thing that is already on the books.
Distracted driving is on the books in nearly every town in the country..
A no brainer. Distracted driving could be anything from looking for a CD while driving. Changing clothes while driving.yawning while driving. Scratching a unrelenting itch while driving. Reading the latest edition of the news paper or racing form while driving. I have seen people do things while driving you don't tell your family about.
Could it be that the ticket writing officer can not get his ticket to stand up in court if it is not a specific law?. Didn't used to be that way.
Can he not say that he noticed driver was leaning over seat looking for something when his vehicle collided with tree.?
Next thing you know there will be a law that you can't drive a red vehicle because some idiot may confuse it with an emergency vehicle and cause a crash slowing for it. Or no blue shirts or jackets while driving as some idiot may confuse you with a police officer in a unmarked car Or some other stupid law. Why is it that we are becoming a nation of laws.? Is common sense no longer available to the human race? Is it being genetically removed by dumbing down our school children?.
Com'on America are we that helpless and unconcerned Sheeple that we are allowing our freedoms to be eroded by these unneeded laws forced upon us by the unknowing non elected bureaucrats?
Remember Minnesota and their dingbat fatigue test? More of that goofy stuff on the way.
Look around you. Have you noticed on the police cars that the term " To serve and protect" is no loner being put on them as the cars are replaced? Just a sign of changing times.
Wake up America. Remember why we now call it the Former USSR.
We are walking in their foot steps now.
