A redesigned version of the Compliance, Safety, Accountability program’s Safety Measurement System website with an updated interface and new features was unveiled this week and is currently in a preview mode for 60 days.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is accepting public comment in that time period and says it will review comments and make any necessary changes prior to implementing the changes.

Here are some of the changes FMCSA has made to the site:

Moving carriers’ BASIC (Behavioral Analysis and Safety Improvement Category) percentile rankings from a carrier’s front summary to within the pages for each BASIC. Carriers’ summary pages will now have a summary of the BASIC scores, rather than all of the BASIC rankings.

Reordering BASIC category display to better show the categories that correlate to crash risk. BASICS with strong associations, like Unsafe Driving and Hours of Service Compliance, will be on the left.

Highlighting every carriers’ individual performance measure (the score not relative to other carriers) in each BASIC to help users better identify a carrier’s performance over time.

Displaying carriers’ safety rating information obtained from a compliance review. Before the changes, the only way users could access the information was to visit FMCSA’s Safety and Fitness Electronic Records System website.

Implementing a new “Take a Tour” feature that shows the changes to the site and the SMS display and helps users learn to use the site.

Making carriers’ safety event groups — the groups of comparable carriers used to calculate the BASIC percentile rankings — accessible to users of the SMS website via download.

Including current insurance and authority status for carriers. Prior, users had to access FMCSA’s Licensing and Insurance Online website.

Allowing users to access carriers’ enforcement case history, including dates the cases close, applicable violations and any fines associated.

Enhancing the display of safety performance over time to show several displays and graphs users can customize.

Clarifying terminology in the SMS and offering a new glossary for key display terms.
