Active members of the military may now train for and obtain a commercial driver’s license in the state in which they are stationed, instead of the state in which they live, thanks to the Military CDL Act of 2012, which passed both chambers of Congress on Oct. 1 and was signed by President Barack Obama on Oct. 19. The act takes away one of the major obstacles for members of military who want to pursue a CDL by allowing states to issue them to military men and women serving outside of their domicile state.
American Trucking Associations President Bill Graves said on Oct. 1 when the bill passed the House and Senate that the looming driver shortage makes it imperative that the bill be made law. “Making it easier for veterans to move into these jobs is a good thing for the military, for the veterans themselves and for our industry,” he said earlier this month.
