Pennsylvania’s Department of Environmental Protection started accepting applications last week for a grant program in which $20 million will be available over the next three years for incremental and conversion costs of heavy-duty  natural gas vehicles for fleets, PDEP announced.

Applications are due Feb. 1, 2013, and $10 million will be available in the first year, $7.5 million the second year and $2.5 million the third year. Vehicles must weigh 14,000 pounds or more and be fueled with compressed natural gas or liquified natural gas to qualify. Also eligible are vehicles that use bi-fuel technology.

Grants will cover up to 50 percent of incremental purchases or retrofit costs per vehicle, with a maximum of 25,000 per vehicle, the announcement says, and incremental purchases will be defined as the “difference between a vehicle eligble for these grants and one powered by tradition fuels, such as diesel or gasoline,” PDEP says.

The first grants will be awarded in March. For an application, visit PDEP’s website and click the Natural Gas Vehicle Grant Program button.
