PeopleNet, a provider of onboard computing and mobile communications systems, announced a new exclusive alert and daily summary enhancements to its Speed Monitoring through a partnership with SpeedGauge, a provider of analytics designed to enable fleets to identify high-risk driving behavior. Both companies also are partnering with Brazos Speciality Risk to give PeopleNet EOBR (electronic onboard recorder) customers subscribing to Speed Monitoring a 5-10 percent discount on pay-per-mile auto liability insurance premiums.

PeopleNet and SpeedGauge are offering a near real-time e-mail that is sent when a driver triggers a speeding event, so that management knows when and where the event has occurred. “In addition to increasing management awareness, the daily summary keeps safety top of mind by letting drivers know how many events they trigger each day,” says Brian McLaughlin, chief operating officer. “This timely information is critical for promoting safe driving habits on a daily basis.”

For maximum operating flexibility, alerts and reports are configurable in terms of establishing notification and reporting thresholds. Fleets may determine how far over the speed limit a vehicle is traveling before an alert is sent and noted on a report. “This exclusive offering is another industry first in PeopleNet’s history of innovations that have helped fleets operate more safely and efficiently,” says Jonathan Hubbard, SpeedGauge chief executive officer.

The Brazos discount program is available now for fleets with 15 or more power units that have EOBRs installed in the entire fleet. Monthly premiums are based on actual miles driven as reported by PeopleNet’s GPS system.

“By offering this discount, Brazos recognizes that near real-time access to speeding events and other driver behaviors is key to minimizing safety risks,” says Jim Angel, PeopleNet head of safety, security and compliance, who developed the new program. “The information is essential for making drivers aware of, and changing, behaviors that undermine safety.”

“We wanted to reward fleets that have taken steps to reduce their safety risk,” says Dwight Dowell, Brazos business development director. “Our statistics show significant safety-, maintenance- and fuel-related cost benefits for fleets equipped with EOBRs and speed monitoring capability.”
