One way the insights are turned into results is by training new drivers during orientation.
New drivers spend almost a day engaged by instructor-led training, quizzes, and online training modules on distracted driving, Nelson says.
CCJ watched a portion of a live meeting on Thursday, Mar. 9. Drivers in the room were both captivated and saddened by the consequences of distracted behaviors the instructor discussed and showed using real-life examples.
One of the most important daily tasks in the safety department is to respond to the critical safety events captured by the SmartDrive system. Nelson and his staff work with the operations and maintenance departments to schedule coaching sessions with drivers.
The coaching addresses whatever issue occurred in the clip, Nelson says, and takes place only when drivers are safely parked with the ignition off.
“We are all in it together, and I think that we have a team here that gets it,” Nelson says. “With company coordination we can have effective training.”
By using the reporting and analytical tools in the SmartDrive dashboard, Arnold is able to proactively address risk. The company also uses custom training modules that it has produced internally. Some of its custom modules incorporate footage from the SmartDrive system, he says.
