The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration announced that its Motor Carrier Safety Advisory Committee will meet Monday-Thursday, Feb. 6-9, which will include a joint meeting with the Medical Review Board on Monday, Feb. 6, to finalize recommendations of the joint MCSAC-MRB subcommittee to the FMCSA administrator on obstructive sleep apnea.

The MCSAC will meet separately on Tuesday-Thursday, Feb. 7-8, where it will consider issues relating to the prevention of harassment of truck and bus drivers through electronic onboard recorders. On Thursday, Feb. 9, there will be a preliminary discussion of ideas and concepts the MCSAC believes the agency should consider concerning motorcoach hours of service. All four days of the meeting will be open to the public.

The meetings will be held Monday-Wednesday, Feb. 6-8, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET and on Thursday, Feb. 9, from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. ET. The meetings will be held at the Hilton Alexandria Old Town, 1767 King St., in Alexandria, Va., in the Washington and Jefferson Rooms on the 2nd floor. The precurser to sleep apnea is fatigue, till the FMCSA decides to address the issues with HOS that causes fatigue and in turn accidents, the problems dealing with safety in commercial transportation will not be resolved. Like all federal agencies you get a lot of extended lip service , but very little positive action.

I got my CDL in 1979 I have seen a lot of changes in my career, some good but mostly bad.For my part California is the worst ,they talk about fatigued drivers, pull over on a ramp or a good wide spot to take a nsp and see how fast you can get a ticket.they will put you back on the road how can this be safe? All the new laws they are putting in place is done by some person sitting behind a desk studying a report or surevy done by another person thats sits behind a desk ,these people has proble never driven a truck or rode any amount of time in the seat of a truck.Same thing about the idle time law this person persons are home in their air condition or heated home sleep or whatever, try sleeping in a truck with no air in the summertime or heat in winter time who can afford a motel ever night ,I know I cant . I personley think they should bring a person that has 10 to25 years of expercient in this office to help wuth these matters.truck drivers make no more money these days than any other person, these people do not live on the road like we do,so please tell me why and how these law makers can justify the crap they come up with. I believe like the other comment I read if we all came together witch I know will never happen and park for a period of time what would people do?No food ,gas With all the BS laws and regulation taking effect a person should really think about choosing this career, for the amount of money it pay just not worst it .

Another way to regulate the trucking industry using "safety' as an excuse/reason. The individuals that started this sleep apnea stuff all had/have their hands in the testing process. OOIDA even asked the original author about her involvement and got nowhere. Yes it's a scam.

If these people really wanted to improve safety they would have left the HOS alone. Best rule that ever came along was the one passed back in 2002 with split sleeper and 34hr reset. Now we have to drive tired or lose more money. Trains can't deliver freight all the freight, or even 30% of it yet we are being regulated back into the stone age. 70 hour weeks, only one reset very 8 days, must have two 1am-5am periods to reset, what a bunch of crap.

Sleep apnea, what a gimmick. If it is so important to transportation safety why not require airline pilots to be tested first?. Require them to spend their money on this BS. They have no place to go, no shoulder or rest area to stop in when they get tired.Their cargo is people, not freight that is inanimate. Plane crashes are far worse than any truck car accident. .
We all get tired at one time or another and the new regulations forced upon us with the new HOS just compounds it.
Sleep apnea has been around since the horse and buggy days, we just did not give it a name until now and to my knowledge no one has really suffered disastrous wholesale effects from it. Because one snores or has a thick neck they are unsafe? In my opinion total BS and it is believed by the unknowing unwilling ignorant. It is those that refuse to stop or pull over for rest that cause the accidents, not snorers.
We all drive vehicles that have the potential to cause harm, property damage and death.
Why not have every driver of every vehicle from the smart car to the SUV's be tested and forced to undergo this BS? Just because a truck driver gets tired when driving is no reason to force this gimmick on every cdl holder. Every one that drives a vehicle gets tired at one time or another. Bar none.
It is discriminate against a working class, It is unfair. We are safer than the average driver. Proven to be so by government and independant studies.
We are being charged, accused and discriminated against because we have CDL's and cannot , will not stick together as a group.

EOBR's are not in any way shape or form going to make our highways safer.
It will not keep drivers awake.
It will not prevent drivers from tailgating.
It will not prevent drivers from speeding.
It will not make drivers use a turn signal properly.
It will not cause drivers to check their mirrors more often.
It will not cause drivers to slow down in bad weather or slick roads.
EOBR's are not a safety device. It is a control device.
It is not about safety. It is about control. Safety is a comfortable word for politicians and Government talking heads to use when speaking to the public instead of using the word control. Control is a scary word .. It should be, it is creeping up on us and we are turning our backs on it hoping it will go away. It won't go away. To put this another way is to tell you that control is the loss of your freedoms to do ANYTHING.

New HOS, Sleep Apnea, EOBR's, are part of the control mechanisms they want to put in place.
It is part of the plan by the power hungry to put in place drivers of their choosing.

Control of the transportation industry is the ultimate goal by those in power.
Whom ever controls the transportation industry controls the country, the wealth and the economy. They will control you.
Wake up America we are becoming a third world country with our eyes wide open.
