3. CSA being audited by Inspector General over data quality
In January, the Office of Inspector General began an assessment of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Compliance Safety Accountability program and its ability to accurately evaluate carrier performance and risk. Aspects of the program remains under fire from industry groups including the American Trucking Associations and the Alliance for Safe, Efficient and Competitive Truck Transportation (ASECTT).
After nearly two years of testing, CSA formally launched in December 2010 and was widely regarded by carriers as an improvement over the SafeStat system it replaced. However, carriers and industry groups have continually complained that there is room for improvement in the system, particularly in the areas of crash accountability and questionable crash risk correlation within some of the Behavioral Analysis and Safety Improvement Categories (BASICs).
