BorgWarner has integrated a magnetic switch (Smart IMS) and added over crank protection (IOCP) on its Delco Remy 38MT and 39MT heavy duty gear reduction starters, used for both on- and off-highway commercial vehicles.
BorgWarner’s IOCP is a built-in circuit breaker that protects the starter from thermal damage by monitoring the temperature and automatically resetting at a safe operating temperature as needed, while also eliminating wiring harnesses. The Smart IMS, introduced to the aftermarket in 2017, provides maximum available voltage to the solenoid by reducing voltage drop. It also features six electronic functions that protect the starter from potential damage caused by operator or system errors.
The pairing of Smart IMS and over crank protection reduces starter-related maintenance and protects the starter from an early life failure, Randy Andis, director of commercial vehicle and PowerDrive Systems said, adding it also enhances the durability and reliability of the starter itself.
The 38MT+ and 39MT Smart Starters with Smart IMS / IOCP will soon be available as an option from the factory on new truck orders.
