Truckload Carriers Association called on its members to urge their U.S. senators to support fuel surcharge legislation (S. 1914) that has been introduced by Sens. John Kerry (D-Mass.) and Christopher Bond (R-Mo.). Unlike the house version, S. 1914 would not require a motor carrier to pay its owner-operators a surcharge if the carrier was unable to collect it from the shipper.

Small Business Administration has extended until May 22 the filing deadline for small business owners to apply for Economic Injury Disaster Loans (EIDLs) due to the economic disruptions that resulted from the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Since Oct. 22, SBA has provided more than $284 million in working capital loans to small businesses nationwide that suffered substantial economic injury as a direct result of the attacks. Missouri announced it is equipping 19 weigh stations with the PrePass system, which allows properly equipped trucks to bypass the stations. The PrePass system has been installed in 23 other states. A similar system called Norpass offers weigh station preclearance in about a dozen other states.

National Association of Small Trucking Companies will hold regional safety seminars June 7-8 in Indianapolis and June 21-22 in Atlanta. The meetings will focus on drug and alcohol testing, tire safety and insurance. For more information, contact NASTC at (800) 264-8580.
