State of California on signThe revenue model for state trucking associations continues to evolve. Some associations now directly and indirectly offer products and services to their members and non-members across state lines.

The New York State Motor Truck Association, for instance, offers Bestpass, a nationwide toll management program for fleets.

Revenue from the for-profit business units of state trucking associations helps to offset expenses and support local, state and industry advocacy and safety programs.

Most recently, the California Trucking Association (CTA) launched a “Trucking Proud Insurance Agency (TPIA)” initiative in partnership with Calif.-based C3 Risk & Insurance Services.

“We are thrilled to offer trucking companies this new, top-tier insurance option,” said Joe Giammona, CTA president in the press announcement. “Trucking Proud’s innovative products combined with the California Trucking Association’s industry acumen will allow the agency to provide the highest quality of service to carriers.”

According to the announcement, TPIA will provide a cross section of competitively priced insurance products for trucking companies across the country that include workers compensation, auto liability and employee benefits insurance. Policy types include traditional guaranteed cost, captive programs, large deductible and self-insured.

“Trucking carriers who want to eliminate the extreme fluctuations traditional insurance present will want to qualify for the Legends Captive insurance product,” Giammona said. “This program will be available for the best carriers that achieve operational excellence by combining sound management, well-maintained equipment and the latest technology.”

Generally, the captive program will target fleets with more than 25 vehicles, but carriers with as few as 5 trucks can qualify if their operations are in order, he says.

As an agent, TPIA will provide additional support services for its insurance products that include a truck inspection app for smartphones and a digital client interface that eliminates paper and PDF applications.

The inspection app can be used by drivers to conduct thorough pre-trip and post-trip inspections.

“This app allows the driver to take a picture of each condition and verify its compliance (or lack thereof) and send it to a company administrator who can easily see every driver and a picture of the condition in an easy-to-use web portal,” Giammona says.

California has seen a hotbed of trucking industry issues that could spread to other states.

As a for-profit entity serving CTA, Trucking Proud will generate a sustainable revenue source, the announcement said, and will “ultimately allow a significant reinvestment into trucking carrier key advocacy issues, including PAGA, CARB, Dynamex, piece rate, truck parking and workforce development,” it added.
