Con-way drivers deal another blow to Teamsters’ efforts at carrier

The Teamsters Union suffered another blow this week from Con-way (No. 5 in the CCJ Top 250) workers, as employees at Con-way Freight’s facility in Buffalo, N.Y., voted to reject representation by the union.

The Buffalo vote marks the sixth election in which Con-way employees have turned away the union, who has been attempting to organize employees at various Con-way Freight facilities since last year.

The Teamsters won over Con-way employees last year in Miami Lakes, Fla., Los Angeles, Calif., and Laredo, Texas.

The Buffalo vote follows Teamsters defeats at Con-way facilities in Santa Fe Springs, Calif., San Fernando Valley, Calif., Bakersfield, Calif., Manchester, N.H., and Harlingen, Texas. The Teamsters have also withdrawn petitions for votes at Con-way facilities in Irvine, Calif., and Orlando, Fla., which Con-way considers victories.

The Teamsters Union has also had its sights set on FedEx (No. 2 in the CCJ Top 250), and in March, scored a win at FedEx Freight’s Stockton, Calif., terminal – the fourth FedEx facility to join the union. It was the union’s first win with FedEx in its last seven tries, having lost votes or withdrawn elections at seven other terminals prior.
