Con-way Freight, a less-than-truckload (LTL) carrier and subsidiary of Con-way Inc., today announced that Driver Sales Representative, Tom Strissel, surpassed the career milestone of driving 3 million consecutive, accident-free miles. Strissel, who started with Con-way in 1984, is the third of Con-way Freight’s 16,000 drivers nationwide to reach this safe-driving achievement. He joins the company’s first 3 Million Miler, James “Jackpot” Sutfin of Las Vegas and Tom Syme of Palatine, Ill. in this exclusive club.

“Tom’s exemplary driving record mirrors Con-way’s commitment to raising the bar for safety in the trucking industry,” said Greg Lehmkuhl, president, Con-way Freight. “We are pleased to honor him for his skill, professionalism and consistency in surpassing this remarkable safe-driving milestone.”

To put the safe-driving milestone into perspective, 3 million miles is the equivalent of driving from Portland, Maine to Portland, Ore., 941 times or running 114,504 Chicago Marathons.

“To be recognized for this achievement means a lot to me,” said Strissel. “I’ve always taken Con-way’s focus on safety to heart and tried my best to do my part to stay safe, drive defensively and avoid accidents. I take the responsibility to drive safely very seriously and I’m proud of my record.”

Strissel has been driving professionally for 36 years. He joined Con-way Freight in June of 1984 as one of the company’s first employees, and currently works out of the company’s Mundelein service center. He was previously recognized for 1 million and 2 million mile safety milestones, and also received the 25-year safe working award, signifying a quarter century of work at Con-way without a workplace injury or accident. He lives in Chicago, Ill., with his wife, Rose. Tom is an avid motorcycle enthusiast and enjoys attending motorcycle rallies.

Over its 30-year history, Con-way Freight has honored more than 200 of its drivers for surpassing2 million safe driving miles, and more than 1,600 who have achieved 1 million safe driving miles.
