Autonomous truck technology will be the focus of an upcoming listening session hosted by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.Autonomous trucks will be the subject of a listening session later this month hosted by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.
FMCSA defines “highly automated commercial vehicles” as those that the vehicle “can take full control of the driving tasks in at least some circumstances,” and adds that they “hold enormous potential benefits for safety, mobility and sustainability.” The vehicles FMCSA is seeking information on are autonomous level three or higher, which include automated systems capable of monitoring the driving environment.
During the meeting, FMCSA is looking for information relating to the design, development, testing and deployment of these vehicles, specifically dealing with CDLs, qualification of drivers, the use of electronic devices, hours-of-service for drivers and inspection, repair and maintenance of the trucks.
The listening session will be held Monday, April 24 from 9:30 a.m. to noon Eastern at the Hyatt Regency in Atlanta. The meeting is free to attend, and no pre-registration is required. Attendees can submit comments before the meeting by searching Docket No. FMCSA-2017-0114 at www.regulations.gov once the docket is published in the Federal Register. There will also be a webcast version of the meeting, and participants will be able to submit comments to be read during the session.
