Attendees of the Great American Trucking Show will have the opportunity to participate in a listening session about the development and deployment of autonomous trucks and technology.
The meeting will be held Friday, Aug. 24, from 1-2:30 p.m. Central at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center in downtown Dallas.
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is hosting the session to gather information on issues relating to the design, development, testing and integration of autonomous trucks. Specifically, the agency is focusing on autonomous levels 3-5, which range from vehicles requiring a driver who is ready to take control of the vehicle at any time to vehicles capable of performing all driving functions under all conditions.
In a Federal Register notice announcing the meeting, FMCSA says it will be a chance for participants to share their views on the FMCSRs as they relate to the development and safe integration of autonomous trucks.
The GATS session is the third in a series held this year with the first occurring June 19 in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and the second taking place July 12 in San Francisco.
Earlier this year, FMCSA received written public comments through a Federal Register notice on the development, testing and deployment of autonomous trucks.
The effort to evaluate regulations that could affect the deployment of autonomous trucks is part of a larger U.S. Department of Transportation initiative to clear a regulatory path for autonomous technology, including driverless trucks.
FMCSA Administrator Ray Martinez said in a recent exclusive interview with CCJ that the agency is planning to release a “definitive roadmap” for how the DOT will move forward with the implementation of autonomous trucks and technology.
