Freightliner LLC, Portland, Ore., unveiled a North American version of the Sprinter, a Class 2-3 vehicle that’s been available from Mercedes-Benz (Freightliner’s sister company) in Europe since 1995. In the U.S., the Sprinter will be offered initially in cargo and passenger van configurations for applications such as parcel and general delivery; shuttle services for airports and municipalities; and light construction and services, such as utilities and landscaping.

GVWs will be 8,550 lb and 9,990 lb; wheelbases will be 118, 140, and 158 in.; and roof heights will be 64 and 73 in. The Sprinter will feature a Mercedes-Benz, 5-cyl, 2.7-liter turbo diesel, rated at 156 hp and 244 lb-ft of torque, mated to a 5-speed automatic transmission. Four-wheel disc brakes with ABS are standard. With the 73-in. roof, the van configuration provides up to 473 cu-ft of cargo space, and can haul payloads up to 5,100 lb. The cargo van will be available in June and the passenger version in September.
