Paccar files non-compliance petition over potential turn signal indicator recall for certain Petes, KWs

Paccar has filed a petition with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to request an exemption from providing a recall notification for an issue with the turn signal indicators on trucks’ dash instrument panel.

Paccar explains in the petition that, due to a programming error in the cab controller software, the turn signal pilot indicator on the instrument panel flashes twice as fast as the turn signals and therefore do not comply with federal regulations. The indicators are required to flash at the same frequency as the turn signals.

The company says it believes the problem is inconsequential to vehicle safety.

“The purpose of the turn signal pilot indicator is to assure that the vehicle operator can determine whether the turn signal system is activated,” the petition states. The company says it believes the pilot indicators accomplish this purpose.

Approximately 197 model year 2015-2016 Kenworth K270 and K370 truck manufactured between Nov. 11, 2014, and March 18, 2015, and model year 2015-2016 Peterbilt 220 trucks manufactured between Nov. 10, 2014, and March 18, 2015 are affected.

NHTSA will seek public comment on the petition for 30 days after it’s posted in the Federal Register. The document is scheduled to be posted Friday, Sept. 25.

Some of the same model trucks were also included in a recall earlier this year.
