Technology for the not-too-distant future: As you may have read, 2007 diesel emissions regulations will require a tenfold decrease in both oxides of nitrogen (NOx) and particulate matter (PM) – (See “Technically Speaking,” CCJ, December 2002).

It’s therefore virtually certain that, to meet those regulations, engine manufacturers will need to employ NOx adsorbers and particulate traps, which will require constant regeneration to avoid becoming plugged.

To that end, ArvinMeritor, Troy, Mich., has developed the Eliminator PM trap, an active system that uses automatic, intelligent-regeneration technology to optimize control of its fuel burner (orange area) for filter regeneration, based on operating conditions.
