XPO to begin offering tuition-free driving schools

XPO Logistics will begin offering tuition-free truck driving schools to CDL applicants.

XPO Logistics (No. 3 on the CCJ Top 250) has announced it will begin offering a tuition-free driving school, along with a part-time job, for student truck drivers.

The company says the driving schools will be conducted at its less-than-truckload service centers. Students will be able to train to obtain a CDL, experienced drivers will be able to learn more about LTL transportation, and XPO will also offer a hostler class for those interested in terminal yard operations, the company adds.

While participating in the driving school, students will work for XPO in paid, part-time dockworker positions while attending class. CDL students will be required to complete classroom training on federal and state highway laws, regulatory and safety compliance, vehicle safety inspection techniques and defensive driving skills. Additionally, they will spend 150 hours behind the wheel with a driver trainer.

“Our CDL training is a unique career opportunity in that both the company and the student have skin in the game,” says Tony Brooks, XPO president of LTL business. “Students commit to classroom and hands-on instruction, and XPO provides free tuition and income while training.”

Once students complete the training, pass the CDL tests and complete a probationary period with the company, they will be eligible for full-time driver positions with XPO.
