Engine Manufacturers Association is appealing a ruling by a federal court in California that the South Coast Air Quality Management District can ban and otherwise regulate the purchasing and leasing of new vehicles by fleet operators. EMA contends that such regulations violate the federal Clean Air Act and argues that the court’s decision could lead to a patchwork of engine standards throughout the United States.
Eaton Corp. obtained a permanent injunction from a federal court in Delaware prohibiting ArvinMeritor from continuing to build or sell ArvinMeritor truck transmissions that incorporate the Engine Synchro Shift automation system. ArvinMeritor said it will appeal the decision against it in the patent infringement lawsuit.
Operation Air Brake, an ongoing effort sponsored by North American commercial motor vehicle inspectors, led to 2,009 vehicles – 17.8 percent of those inspected – being placed out of service for brake-related problems during a publicly announced 16-hour inspection on Sept. 5.
