The stockings were hung by the chimney with care, with hopes that St. Nick soon would be there. Well, St. Nick never would get to those stockings next to the chimney with all those goodies if a bunch of trucks hadn’t hauled them to the place they originally were purchased.
Just think about that for a minute. Christmas, the most wonderful time of the year, would be impossible without trucks. In fact, a whole lot of what we use the other 364 days of the year would be mighty difficult to find if a truck hadn’t transported it to the mom-and-pop store, corner drugstore, grocery store, superstore or megamall where it was bought.
And yet, the vast majority of folks don’t understand that relationship – that the trailers they see on the highways, the same ones they try to cut off in traffic to gain a few extra seconds toward their favorite shopping destinations, essentially are hauling the same stuff they’re going to buy when they reach those destinations. Whoa.
As Red Simpson sang 40 years ago, “Santa’s comin’ in a big ol’ truck.” Too bad most people beyond truckers don’t realize it.
