Rep. John J. Duncan Jr. (R-Tenn.) has been appointed vice chairman of the House transportation committee vice while Rep. Tom Petri (R-Wis.) was selected to assume Duncan’s former position as highways subcommittee chairman.

On Jan. 16, Transportation Committee Chairman Bill Shuster announced appointments that the committee is expected to confirm at its Jan. 23 organizational meeting. The Pennsylvania Republican also selected Rep. Jeff Denham (R-Calif.) to replace Shuster as head of the the railroads, pipelines and hazardous materials subcommittee.

As vice chairman, Duncan will lead a series of special panels tasked with making recommendations to the full committee. Petri’s highways and transit subcommittee includes oversight of national surface transportation policy and regulation of commercial motor vehicles.

In November, Shuster became transportation committee chairman, replacing Rep. John Mica, who had reached his party-set term limit. The Florida Republican will continue as a transportation committee member and recently was named chairman of a House oversight and government reform subcommittee.
