ConMet announced efficiency results for its TruckWings device tested on CNG and diesel trucks Sunday at the American Trucking Associations Technology & Maintenance Council’s 2024 Annual Meeting and Transportation Technology Exhibition in New Orleans. TruckWings parent TruckLabs was acquired by ConMet in late 2023.
Mesilla Valley Transportation Solutions (MVTS) conducted tests on Class 8 CNG trucks and Class 8 diesel trucks to evaluate the TruckWings product’s efficiency and found a 5.25% improvement in efficiency for CNG trucks and a 6.2% improvement for diesel trucks.
"Every TuckWing you deploy," said Daniel Burrows, TruckLabs founder and vice president and general manager of TruckWings, "takes the emissions of two cars off the road," Burrows said.
Mounted behind the cab, TruckWings are a fully automated aerodynamic device that works without driver intervention. Addition of a CNG tank crates a larger gap between the back of the cab and trailer versus a diesel semi.
Burrows said two identically spec'd Volvo trucks ran simultaneously at 65 MPH on a 9-mile circle track near Pecos, Texas. One vehicle remained unchanged throughout testing, while the test vehicle had ConMet’s TruckWings device installed and deployed.
Mesilla Valley Transportation Solution has been testing TruckWings since 2012, Burrows noted.
