Trucker strike, protest convoy mostly deemed a bust

By James Jaillet on

The Ride for the Constitution driver protest convoy scheduled for Friday, Oct. 11, has largely been deemed a bust by national and local media outlets, had little effect on traffic and failed to gain much attention from lawmakers, as it intended, reports from D.C. say.

Roughly 30 trucks showed up for the protest convoy. The event’s organizers had said thousands of truck drivers were planning to overtake the Capital Beltway  — I-495 in D.C. — to cause traffic jams in an attempt to get the attention of Congress.

The protest convoy was part of a larger planned “shutdown” (trucker strike) and a buy-nothing protest. The movement, especially the convoy, received much attention from national media last week, including the likes of Fox News, USA Today, CNN, Gawker, Politico and The Washington Post.

In an interview with Fox News, protest organizer Ernest Lee said some 10,000 truckers would be participating in the Ride for the Constitution.

However, support for the protest and convoy began plummeting in the middle of last week due to lack of organization and some hefty credibility issues with its chief organizers.

Many truckers had also expressed their non-support for the protest. Moreover, the American Trucking Associations and the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association both released statements saying they were against the effort.

Here’s a roundup of headlines about Friday’s small turnout:

Fox News: Dozens, not thousands, show up for DC trucker protest

The Washington Post: Trucker protest hits Beltway but causes no major delays

USA Today: Truckers ‘rolling protest’ hard to spot around capital

Politico: Trucker protest a bust

It is unfortunate this didn't work. Sadly, it also shows how people that agree to do something won't keep their word.

It's a shame one of the people who was taking donations for this ended up dissappearing with the money. Or was lying about all the donations they had received was false. I for one wanted to see drivers and owner operators pull together and do this.

I just closed my small company because of the drivers small companies attract aren't worth hiring. You don't know this till after you hire them and they tear your equipment up. That is what needs to be fixed also. Unfortunately, FMCSA and the SAFER system is going to cause the companies to hire drivers just out of school with very little training. Because CSA scores for driver are going to be to high for the older reliable drivers to be hired.

Who's Dary Wirth ? Do you work for C.J.J. ? A.T.A. ? O.O.I.D.A. or The New York Times. I was an Owner Operator for over 15 Years, when I was a Meat Hauler out of Greeley, Colorado. I  say, " If this one was a Bust, do better next time, with what you learned from your misstakes from this time " !!

No surprise here. Actions such as this would have required a consistent, cognizant message and the support of a multitude of companies, along with substatial monetary resources to really be successful. This effort, thrown together on a whim by questionable people, with a decidedly partisan message; had no real chance at success. People with clearer minds understood this; hence, no participation.

this article is not true- only to the media it is. there were many more trucks there than that  maybe you should have watched the live feed

They should have just run the trucks into the Capitol and maybe that would have gotten someone's attention.

Apparently, the emotional hyperbole just didn't carry the day.  Trying to convince people by appealing to common sense and rational planning might have worked better.  Next time, do what adults do:  submit cogent, rational arguments for changing a system you don't like. Give the government a legitimate plan instead of threatening to destory the government.  Send them to the US DOT and congressional committees that handle transportation issues, etc.  Trying to CREATE a grassroots revolution through emotional manipulation doesn't work; it's counter-productive.

I still don't know what they were protesting

@BobbyNChellRiha I tried to watch the traffic cameras, but they are crappy on a bad day!   It was very rainy and I was wondering if they were looping the feed on it, too.

@DavidMac Do David, did you have the same reaction to the "Occupy" activists? How about the Queer Nation protests, the anti-war protesters, Cindy Sheehan, the pro-illegal alien protesters, or do you just criticize protests of those who aren't pursing a liberal cause?

@nick Justice they were riding for our constitutional rights, for trucker regulations, and for our Vets that have been locked out of their memorials. They did something most wouldn't!

@REDorsey @BobbyNChellRiha Most that I seen was on sat and someone started blocking us out of the live cam but still saw most of it. Sunday when everyone was there Truckers, Vets and bikers we got blocked then they looped it before the gov was sent out in their riot gear. Although some still got video of the way they treated our vets. They didnt want any I am proud of all of them for what they had done. Most people dont even try to do anything but sit back and complain on what is going on and put down the people that are standing up, which is something everyone needs to do!

@hasserl FYI, I feel the same about any Marxist group that follows the Alinsky "Rules for Radicals".  When the goal is to destroy, not convince, I don't care what side of the political spectrum the group is on.  It seems that the trucker revolution is likely to be flying a false flag and that the reaction of the general public whould have been anger and contempt if the revolution created what the instigators planned.  Read history:  it's always the second (counter) revolution that carries the day, good or bad.  The backlash by the citizens would have given Obama a reason to nationalize the trucking industry, just as he's done to the health care industry.

I can see the Regs, they and CSA are a joke...the rest? Constitutional rights? Sounds like an anti DEM  movement and not anti Gov

@DavidMac Sir, all I said is I didn't understand what you meant.I haven't sneered at you. I was military also. Also, married to a career Naval Officer. I have my own set of accomplishments. I also have my own set of failures. Starting a trucking Co. was one. I grew up in a trucking family. My father, brother and I have a combined 70 years of driving and owner op. experience. After SAFER and CSA2010 went into effect, the independent driver and owner operator was fixing to be pushed out of the window. If you don't believe me, look up any small company SAFER score. Most percentages are so high no one will load them. Luckily, I seen the light at the end of the tunnel and pulled the plug before we got buried to deep. Unfortunately, not everyone can see the big picture. I spend at least 8 hours a night combing through FMCSA's website staying up to date on all the B.S. they are trying to push through. If you want me to qualify myself more, just ask.

@oklaroadrunner It means "career soldier".  And read my post again.  I've served my country a hell of a lot more than than most of you and yet you sneer at me as if I'm NOTHING?  I've driven big rigs a lot more miles than most of you and done more in my life than most of you; for you to look down upon my accomplishments and service really shows me that the "trucker revolution" was nothing more than a left-wing false flag operation.

oklaroadrunner

@DavidMac Sir, I'm not sure what you meant by professional soldier, but a lot of the truck drivers have also served our country. I for one. When you make comments like we have nothing to offer our country, you sir need to go back to old school and remember who you are. We have all done for our country and still do. This is why we start our trucks every morning, wanting to do our part.

DavidMac

Jayne, you vilify and denigrate me but that's simply your ignorance that your wear on your sleeve.  I was a professional soldier (US Army) and served three tours in Viet Nam.  I've worked heavy construction, personal security and, of course, truck driver over the road.  I've done more for my country than you and your opinionated ilk have ever thought of doing.  Next time, keep your erroneous opinions to yourself; it's YOU who have nothing to offer this country.

@DavidMac  @hasserlthis is the very reason this country is in the mess it is in. people like you who sit on the side line and Monday morning quarterback. these truckers expressed their displeasure with our government. however, they took a backseat to the veterans of our country, rightfully so? in many ways yes, our vets should and will always come first in this country, they sir fought and died so people can sit on their ass and criticize the actions or lack of actions of others

David, apparently you have not heard, government forces have been entering homes without a warrant for quite some time (1980's ?); all in the name of the "Drug War". Many citizens, dogs and law enforcement officers have been killed in the process. I often wonder how people have decided that before Obama the US government was good and everyone was free to do as they please. Government regulation of the trucking industry has been in place for a very long time; as it happens, new regulations just pile on to those already in place (new people making a name for themselves), this has happened with all adminstrations throughout those many years.

DavidMac
DavidMac

@BobbyNChellRiha  @hasserl Of course the government doesn't listen!  Why do you think we had a revolution in 1776?  You may well place the blame on the government, but shouldn't you also blame the citizens who voted for that government?  It's a fact that way too many Americans WANT a socialist government and they want me to pay for it.  Those fools are the real enemy of this country and they are your neighbors and co-workers.  Try to convince them that THEY are the problem.  Don't give the government a reason to institute martial law (because Obama would love to be able to enter your home without a warrant).

BobbyNChellRiha
BobbyNChellRiha

@DavidMac  @hasserl Sir the goal was not to destroy but to open the eyes and ears of people. We have our rights going down the drain because of a government that does not listen- The healthcare was FORCED on the people of the USA and we have had enough. Trust me there will be more. They work for us and they are suppose to protect the people. The problem is the media hiding the important information because they are scared and paid off. People need to look outside the box instead of trusting everything that is put in front of them thinking everything is done for the wrong reasons and not seeing the truth.

@oklaroadrunner @nick Justice @nick I totally agree with that oklaroadrunner. It does have to be WE the people. I still have to give credit to the truckers bikers and vets! although Everyone needs to do the same thing. We are also truck drivers. We have all had enough I am doing what I can , but it takes everyone to do their part to let us be heard, I will keep my guns, and I will keep praying and making this public. My whole point of the main discussion was about media lying because of the fact there were alot more trucks there than 30- ALLOT more

oklaroadrunner
oklaroadrunner

@nick Justice  @BobbyNChellRiha  @nick It wasn't an anti-dem movement. Anti-Gov movement. When has either side did anything for the constituents? The House and Senate has been in there WAY too long. We need time restraints on congress just like the President or King or what ever he is calling himself now. We need people in there to listen to us. WE THE PEOPLE. This would put a stop to cronyism and the lifers in congress. As far As, constitutional rights goes, how long before the gov. says we can't discuss in open about any political content? Or in Constitution terms First Amendment. What about buying a gun? They are already trying to stop that. (second amendment) What about Supreme Court discussing the legality of praying in public? any of these things strike a nerve?
