Paying Uncle Sam online

The Internal Revenue Service last month announced that businesses and individuals can now pay taxes over the Internet. The Electronic Federal Tax Payment System OnLine offers a secure website (www.eftps.gov) for tax payments. Businesses and individuals can enroll in EFTPS-OnLine through the website and receive a confirmation kit by mail with instructions for obtaining an Internet password. A unique personal identification number (PIN) will be mailed separately to new EFTPS users.

EFTPS-OnLine allows individual taxpayers to schedule payments up to 365 days in advance. Business taxpayers can schedule payments up to 120 days in advance.

A non-Internet version of EFTPS has operated for almost five years, and business taxpayers having total tax deposits of more than $200,000 a year must use EFTPS for their tax payments.
