Relief proposed for munitions haulers

The Federal Highway Administration has proposed to include as specialized equipment dromedary-equipped truck tractor-semitrailer combination vehicles when hauling munitions for the U.S. Department of Defense. Using dromedaries mounted on the truck frame behind the cab and in front of the fifth wheel, Military Traffic Management Command munitions carriers can haul ammunition and fuses on one combination vehicle rather than two. The FHWA proposal frees such vehicles up to 75 feet in overall length from state enforcement of length limits. Carriers could rely on the specialized equipment designation only under certain strict conditions.
