Beginning Aug. 29, traffic on a four-mile stretch of Interstate 66 in Manassas, Va., will be detoured at night for about two months as part of the Virginia Department of Transportation’s I-66 widening project.
I-66 westbound traffic will be detoured for at least the first two weeks, then eastbound traffic will be detoured for two or more weeks. The traffic detour will alternate between the westbound and eastbound lanes during the two-month period. VDOT will give motorists one week’s notice prior to switching directions.
An I-66 westbound detour will be in effect Sunday through Thursday nights from 9 p.m. until 5 a.m., and from 9 p.m. Saturday nights until 9 a.m. Sunday mornings. There will be no westbound detour on Friday nights.
Eastbound traffic will detour to U.S. 29 Monday nights through Thursday nights from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m., from 9 p.m. Friday until 9 a.m. Saturday and from 9 p.m. Saturday until 9 a.m. Sunday. There will be no eastbound detour on Sunday nights.
Motorists should expect the five-mile detour to add 45-60 minutes to their trip, particularly if traveling before midnight.
The detour will not be in effect over two holiday weekends: Labor Day, Sept. 2-5; and Columbus Day, Oct. 7-10.
The detours allow VDOT to reduce the original 90-day construction schedule to 60 days.
