The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration wants to improve commercial vehicle and driver safety inspections by using more thorough performance-based inspections and is asking interested parties for suggestions on how to accomplish this goal.

Technologies such as advanced sensors, onboard diagnostics and wireless communications could improve both the effectiveness and efficiency of the inspection process, the agency said in a request for information.

The RFI is part of FMCSA’s Comprehensive Safety Analysis 2010, or CSA-2010, initiative — a top-to-bottom review of how the agency can develop its safety programs to improve effectiveness.

Comments are due Oct. 17. For the RFI, which includes specific questions posed by FMCSA, visit http://dms.dot.gov/search and search Docket No. 22097 or click here.
