Freight index up half a point

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, the Freight Transportation Services Index rose half a percentage point in August to 112.4 from the July level of 111.9. This comes after two consecutive months of declining freight indices.

The August 2005 level is 2 percent higher than the August 2004 level of 110.2.

The overall TSI, which includes passenger services, fell 0.1 percent, from July’s 111.6 to August’s 111.5, for the second consecutive monthly decline.

The TSI, which includes historic data from 1990 to the present, remains under development and is considered experimental. The base year for the index is 2000.
