They’re all imitated and sold on the cheap. But when it comes to safety-critical truck parts, the ultimate price of imitations can be far greater than any money saved upfront.

“Automotive counterfeit parts are a $3 billion-per-year business in the U.S. alone,” notes Tim Kraus, vice president and executive director of the Heavy Duty Manufacturers Association (HDMA). Globally, that figure swells to $12 billion. “And most of it is safety-related
