USA Truck reported a 26 percent increase in net income, the largest first-quarter net income in company history. The Van Buren, Ark.-based firm said net income reached $3.4 million for the quarter, up 26 percent from the $2.7 million it reported during the same quarter last year.

Despite those positive results, Robert M. Powell, USA Truck’s chairman and chief executive officer, called the first quarter of 2006 “arguably the most difficult quarter that we have seen.” Powell said performance was driven by a slight improvement in the operating ratio and 7 percent growth in base revenue, which reached $96.8 million during the quarter.
