Qualcomm, a provider of business-to-business wireless solutions, recently announced that Averitt, a freight and supply chain management provider, is one of the first major providers of truckload and less-than-truckload transportation to implement an end-to-end solution using Qualcomm’s OmniTracs and OmniExpress mobile communications systems.

Averitt selected Qualcomm for its entire fleet of trucks, service centers and headquarters to improve fleet communications, productivity and operational efficiency. Averitt’s fleet includes LTL, truckload and dedicated fleet account tractors. The truckload operations were using the OmniTracs mobile communications system when Averitt decided to expand the use of mobile communications within its operations to help improve shipment visibility for logistics planning and reduce time and administration costs for its customers.

“Averitt is a leader in their field, and like Qualcomm, they’re always looking for ways to improve services and pass savings on to their customers,” says Norman L. Ellis, vice president and general manager for San Diego-based Qualcomm Wireless Business Solutions. “Combining OmniTracs and OmniExpress on their entire fleet and at their service centers will help Averitt deliver a new level of service and added value.”

Qualcomm’s OmniExpress system is a terrestrial-based digital wireless fleet management system designed expressly for carrier fleets and construction equipment companies that operate in North American metropolitan areas and main highway corridors. Qualcomm’s OmniTracs mobile communications system is a satellite-based wireless fleet management system with robust coverage throughout North America.

“Our 3,500 trucks are now always connected at more than 100 locations, including our service centers, dedicated fleet accounts and corporate headquarters via a direct link to Qualcomm’s network communications center for complete visibility throughout our company,” says David Henry, director of systems design of Averitt. “The OmniTracs and OmniExpress combined system provides better planning information for our customers earlier, and with direct feeds into various optimization programs designed to provide service at reduced costs. Qualcomm’s software provides a simple interface for data exchange between our drivers and host transportation management systems, which allows us to seamlessly update our systems around the clock.”
