J.J. Keller & Associates and the National Private Truck Council recently presented a free webcast, “Driver Pay and Productivity, Optimizing Performance and Profitability,” that the groups say provided an in-depth discussion of how companies with private fleets can improve driver productivity.

For those who were unable to participate in the webcast, a free recording of the presentation is available at www.jjkeller.com/driverpay2. Gary Petty, NPTC president and chief executive officer, is the moderator. Other presenters include Jeff Jaeger, CTP, regional logistics director at Dean Foods; Bob Boyich, vice president of sales and marketing at CPC Logistics; John Hinton, fleet member representative at NPTC; and Mark Weaver, safety consultant at Neenah, Wis.-based J.J. Keller.

In the recorded webcast, presenters explain different ways of compensating drivers and outline examples of pay plans that are based on productivity. They stress the importance of obtaining driver plan buy-in as well as periodically reviewing the program to verify its fairness and effectiveness. They also emphasize the importance of including a safety component/incentive to encourage safety compliance.

Presenters also discuss noncompensation-based techniques for improving driver productivity, including the use of information technology, material handling and equipment improvements, and changes in operation and delivery requirements to save drivers’ time. Participants in the live webcast were able to send questions live or via a chatroom feature.

Another live webcast, “Driver Pay and Productivity: Case Study Analysis,” is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 24.
