C.R. England, a Salt Lake City-based provider of refrigerated and dry truckload services, has announced a pay increase for its drivers, effective Aug. 1. On short-haul loads, company drivers will receive as much as a 66 percent increase per mile, and independent contractors will get up to a 72 percent increase per mile.

The length of haul for C.R. England drivers ranges from 50 to 2,000 miles per load, with the average being about 1,500 miles per load. Based on the new pay scale, company drivers now will earn up to 50 cents per mile, and independent contractors earn up to $1.50 per mile.

The average starting salary for new drivers is $36,000, but trainers and independent operators can make more than $100,000 annually. A “fuel cap” program for independent contractors limits the cost of diesel fuel to $1.25 per gallon.
