Fontaine fifth wheels are available for standard-duty, heavy-duty and severe-duty applications. Mounts include sliding and fixed assemblies.

Special features
Fontaine says it is the only fifth-wheel manufacturer to offer both a pressed-steel and a cast-steel fifth wheel. Options include a low-lube 7000 series top plate, air-actuated top plates, blocked heavy-duty fifth wheels and severe-duty fifth wheels.

Design advantages
Fontaine says its advanced TechLock System built into every No-Slack II model delivers the lightest, strongest and simplest standard fifth wheel in the industry. The pull force (65 pounds) required to open the wheel is said to be lower than any other fifth wheel. The patented No-Slack II locking mechanism is designed to automatically eliminate slack to save labor and time, and reduce wear. A special safety trigger makes false couplings virtually impossible, according to the company.

JOST INTERNATIONAL
Models and basic specs

Jost’s basic model is the JSK37USL series, which is a cast ductile iron rated at 50K vertical load and 150K drawbar. The company also offers the JSK37USA top plate, which is for cab-actuated air release on the locking mechanism. The Jost JSK37UWL series offers low-lube technology to include liners on the top plate, eliminating the need for periodic lubrication, and is designed for low-frequency coupling applications such as beverage, tankers, etc. The JSK36USL series employs the same internal parts for the locking mechanism in a fabricated top plate rated at 45K and 150K. The Jost JSK38C model is rated at 70K and 150K.

Special features
The JSK37USL and JSK36USL series, according to Jost, offer the simplest locking mechanism possible with only four moving parts; both come standard with the company’s proprietary cushion ring in the throat area to absorb impact during coupling and eliminate wear to the trailer’s kingpin. The JSK37USA air release retains the secondary locking mechanism featured on Jost’s standard design; it also retains a normal release handle as a manual override to the air release.

Design advantages
Jost fifth wheels are designed for the safety of the positive locking mechanism; two key factors are the kingpin guides that are integral to the casting and eliminate the possibility of false couplings. The rugged locking bar, when engaged, is designed to come completely across the throat, positively locking the kingpin in place. The design also allows the user to quickly rebuild the wheel without the need to remove the top plate from the vehicle.
