Con-way Inc. has announced the launch of the Con-way Scholarship Program for 2007. Entering its 16th year, the program will award scholarships to high school graduates and continuing college students throughout the United States who are children of company employees.

In 2006 the program awarded 40 new college scholarships and renewed 99 existing scholarships representing some $135,000 in grants. Funding for 2007 scholarship awards has been increased to more than $155,000. Recipients are selected for their stellar academic achievements, exemplary community service and strong extracurricular activities.

“Helping the children of our employees pursue their goals for a college education is one of the most important roles we can play as an enterprise,” says Douglas W. Stotlar, president and chief executive officer of San Mateo, Calif.-based Con-way. “It’s consistent with our core values, particularly that of excellence since we are recognizing some of our best and brightest young men and women for their work ethic, integrity and academic achievement. We’re proud to be able to give back to our communities in this way.”

The program is open to high school seniors and graduates who are children of company employees at the parent company and its major operating components, Con-way Freight, Con-way Truckload Services and Menlo Worldwide. Awards may be renewed for up to three additional years or until a bachelor’s degree is obtained. The program application period closes Feb. 15.

The program is managed by the independent group Scholarship America, a national nonprofit student aid service organization, which conducts the evaluation and selection process. Students who have a parent employed by a Con-way company are eligible to apply after the parent’s third year of continuous employment.

Over the past 15 years, Con-way has awarded more than $2.7 million in scholarships to 852 recipients. Employees may obtain applications from their respective human resources department, or complete the application online at
