Although more than 90 percent of the on-road diesel fuel complies with the ultra-low-sulfur diesel (ULSD) standard, a survey found 15 percent of pumps were labeled incorrectly, and more than 9 percent were not labeled.
This is a problem for the trucking industry, as new trucks equipped with 2007-compliant engines require ULSD. According to the American Trucking Associations, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has begun a more formal enforcement campaign.
EPA recently announced that it has issued 150 notices of violation with proposed penalties ranging from $500 to $1,000 for unlabeled or improperly labeled diesel pumps.
