The National Motor Freight Traffic Association announced that it will conduct a press conference Monday, Oct. 22, during the upcoming American Trucking Associations’ annual meeting in Orlando, Fla., to discuss how NMFTA is reorganizing and establishing new procedures to allow it to continue producing the National Motor Freight Classification.
The NMFC is used by carriers, shippers and 3PLs as a basis for determining the price to transport goods in North America. Classifications for individual commodities are based on density, stowability, handling and liability characteristics. Previously, the NMFTA had established the National Classification Committee of 100 carrier representatives collaborating to develop the classifications for each commodity and maintain the NMFC.
In May 2006, the Surface Transportation Board repealed NMFTA’s antitrust immunity, casting doubt over whether the carriers could continue to establish the classification standards as they have in the past.
At the press conference, Bill Pugh, NMFTA executive director, and Bill Moore, immediate NMFTA past chairman, will unveil the new organizational structure and procedures they say will allow the continuation of the NMFC. Handouts will be available.
