Contract Freighters Inc. announced today, Dec. 26, that it will purchase 140 Cummins 2007 ISX engines with the Cummins particulate filter. CFI says it selected the SmartWay-approved engine for its performance during an over-the-road fleet test.
“CFI joined the SmartWay Transport Partnership to ensure that we’re part of a long-term solution toward reducing emissions and fuel consumption from trucking operations,” says Herb Schmidt, president of Joplin, Mo.-based CFI. “We are committed to providing our drivers with the best equipment available and selecting equipment that has minimum impact on our environment. CFI applauds Cummins for its SmartWay-approved engine.”
With the new Cummins ’07 ISX engine, CFI says it now is able to leverage properly specified powertrain and electronic engine settings to maximize overall fuel efficiency and lower emissions. The engine features include Cummins’ patented Load-Based Speed Control, cruise control and gear-down protection designed to enable drivers to shift gears at a lower rpm to help optimize fuel consumption.

SmartWay Transport is a voluntary partnership between the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and freight industry businesses aimed at reducing emissions of carbon dioxide by 33 to 66 million metric tons and nitrogen oxide by up to 200,000 tons, as well as saving up to 150 million barrels of oil per year. The program officially opened to all companies in February 2004.
In October, CFI won its second consecutive EPA SmartWay Excellence Award based on its implementation of technologies and strategies aimed at reducing greenhouse gases and other emissions from the transportation sector.
