The American Transportation Research Institute launched an online survey Thursday as part of its annual data collection to produce its 2014 Operational Costs of Trucking report.

The survey is aimed at for-hire motor carriers. ATRI will use the data in various research studies relating to industry productivity, driver issues and efficiency. All respondents of the survey will also be sent an advanced copy of the report.

The research conducted provides carriers with a high-level benchmarking tool and government agencies with real-world data for future infrastructure improvements.

The survey asks 16 questions related to the operating costs of carriers. Some of the information asked includes:

•A company’s annual trucking-related revenue in 2014

•Fleet size, average age and average number of miles traveled for different equipment

•How long a company keeps equipment

•If a company uses electronic logging devices

•Driver pay per mile or per hour

•Information about team drivers

•Percentage of miles that were non-revenue or dead-head miles

Carriers are encouraged to take the confidential survey. Results will be available later in the year.
