Commercial Fleet Graphics awards

Since 1978, Commercial Carrier Journal and the National Private Truck Council, Alexandria, Va., have co-sponsored the Commercial Fleet Graphics Awards to recognize individual and corporate commitments to excellence in the design and use of commercial vehicle markings.
There are three good reasons why that purpose remains valid, and why CCJ and the NPTC continue to coordinate, sponsor and publicize these awards:

  • Encouraging good-looking equipment is good for our industry because attractive trucks enhance the public’s perception of the motor carrier industry and establish the right example for all commercial vehicle operators to follow;
  • Encouraging design excellence is good marketing. An effective vehicle graphic design sends a controlled, positive message about a company and its products on a mobile billboard as it rolls down the highway;
  • More conspicuous vehicles can dramatically add to the margin of safety on our highways. That is especially true at night, when reflective materials – beyond those required by law – are in use.
    The contest has two categories: Day and Night. There is no distinction for vehicle type. Each category has a first-, second- and third-place winner, and an optional honorable mention place may be awarded at the judges’ discretion.
    Entries in the 2000 contest were judged by:
  • Julie Cirillo, assistant administrator (chief safety officer)
    Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration
  • George Mundell, vice president, operations
    National Private Truck Council
  • Sam Rea, program coordinator,
    Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration
  • Jim Thomas, former editorial director
    CCJ/Owner Operator/rpm magazines

    The Commercial Fleet Graphics Awards competition is open to fleets operating vans, straight trucks, tractor-trailers and buses. Excluded from the competition are fleet cars and one-of-a-kind, special-purpose vehicles, such as show trucks.
