Global battery manufacturer Clarios has announced its intention to locate new supercapacitor system production in the United States. The company is currently scouting U.S. locations for a next-generation technology campus. The move, part of a $6 billion investment plan for the U.S. energy manufacturing sector, is significant for North American vehicle production as most supercapacitor production resides in China.
"The innovative pairing of our supercapacitor technology and market leading AGM batteries is the ideal solution for the auto sector and beyond," said Mark Wallace, CEO, at Clarios. "This announcement expands our American manufacturing capabilities to serve our customers with cutting edge technology and help secure supply chains in the U.S."
Earlier this year, Clarios announced it signed a deal with a major automotive manufacturing supplier to supply its advanced supercapacitors in 12V and 48V vehicle architecture, where they provide advanced energy storage. In Clarios’ solution, low-voltage supercapacitor systems have specific use cases in autonomous driving applications where short, high-power bursts are needed from AGM (absorbent glass mat) batteries, such as brake-by-wire and steer-by wire functions.
Clarios said the supercapacitors paired with its AGM batteries offer enhanced safety, improved performance and reliability while supplying critical power redundancy. The company expects to announce the specifc site for its supercapacitor production by the end of the year.
