Louisiana Republican Mike Johnson was narrowly reelected Speaker of the House Friday, edging New York Democrat and House minority leader Rep. Hakeem Jeffries by three votes.
Johnson, who first took the post in 2023 following Kevin McCarthy's ouster, had President-elect Donald Trump's support to lead the 119th Congress and spearhead a legislative docket that has plenty of implications for the trucking industry.
“We look forward to working with him in advancing key priorities of small business truckers across America, especially expanding truck parking," said Todd Spencer, president of Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association. "Over 70% of America’s freight is transported exclusively by truck, yet there is only one safe truck parking space for every 11 trucks on the road. We are confident in the leadership of Speaker Johnson and the bipartisan, pro-trucker coalition in Congress to get the job done and pass truck parking legislation."
Johnson was first sworn into office as a member of Congress in January 2017 and has served as a deputy whip for House Republicans,[ as a member of the Judiciary Committee, and as a member of the Armed Services Committee. Johnson has also chaired the Republican Study Committee and served as vice chair of the House Republican Conference from 2021 to 2023.
Following his swearing-in Friday afternoon, Johnson administered the oath of office for the House, swearing in the 119th Congress. Johnson officially re-takes his post just two days before lawmakers are supposed to certify Trump’s presidential election.
